“Here is a mantra, a short one that I give you. You may imprint it on your hearts and let every breath of yours give expression to it. The mantra is: ‘Do or Die.’ We shall either free India or die in the attempt; we shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery.”
This powerful call for mass resistance in 1942 galvanized Indians across caste, creed, and region to rise against British rule.
“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom… A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new — when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.”
Delivered on the eve of independence, Nehru’s speech is one of the most iconic expressions of India’s rebirth.
3. Subhas Chandra Bose – INA Rally Speech (1944)
“Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom! It is blood alone that can pay the price of freedom. You give me your blood and I promise you freedom.”
A rallying cry for youth and soldiers of the Indian National Army (INA), Bose’s words still echo in every Indian patriot’s heart.
“Revolution is an inalienable right of mankind. Freedom is an imperishable birthright of all. The labourer is the real sustainer of society. To the altar of this revolution, we have brought our youth as incense.”
Even while on trial, Bhagat Singh inspired an entire generation with his fearless ideals and revolutionary thoughts.
5. Sarojini Naidu – Parliamentary Address (1947
“As a woman, I have no country. As a woman, I want no country. As a woman, my country is the whole world… Yet today, as an Indian woman, I feel I have not only a country but a world of hopes wrapped in the tricolor of my land.”
Known as the Nightingale of India, her words reflected the spirit of hope and responsibility that came with freedom.
